Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Gary Taubes

The most influential person on our culture over the past five years regarding the positive and healthy benefits of livin' la vida low-carb has got to be New York Times science journalist Gary Taubes. Ever since he wrote the column "What If It's All Been A Big Fat Lie?" in 2002, Taubes has garnered worldwide attention for his meticulous research into the studies on carbohydrate restriction and exposed the fallacy of the low-fat movement.

In September 2007, he released his long-awaited book about this subject entitled Good Calories, Bad Calories which has given him a platform yet again for sharing what he has learned about diet delusions, nutritional myths, and fitness follies. It is arguably one of the most important health-related books to come out since the days of the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins.

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: FAQ

You've got questions, LOTS and LOTS of questions. So I'm here to help answer the most frequently asked questions, aka FAQ. This will be an ever-swelling amoeba of the common everyday kinda stuff people ask me about livin' la vida low-carb. Here goes:

Who is Jimmy Moore and why is he talking about low-carb?

I'm that Jimmy Moore character and I am overjoyed about low-carb because it changed my life forever beginning on January 1, 2004. That's the day I started the Atkins diet (yes, I read the book and survived!) at 410 pounds and I went on to lose 180 pounds in the span of one year. It was an amazing experience I detailed in my first book Livin' La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year and I'm absolutely convinced the low-carb lifestyle is the way I should eat for the rest of my long and healthy life! It may be what's right for YOU, too!

Are you still eating low-carb?

Yep, absolutely I am STILL eating this way (in fact, I'm working on my second book about this very subject right now tentatively called VIVA! Livin' La Vida Low-Carb: Strategies For Long-Term Weight Loss Success). My philosophy is to "dance with the one that brung ya" and livin' la vida low-carb is it! I lost my weight by following the principles of the Atkins diet (yes, the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution that was actually written by Dr. Robert C. Atkins and not just some arbitrary "meat, cheese, and eggs" diet!) and I'm keeping it off by continuing to follow a controlled-carbohydrate approach.

Do you have "loose skin" after losing all that weight?

Regardless of what you have "heard" about the issue of "loose skin" after a large weight loss, let me tell you the truth from my firsthand experience--you lose the elasticity in your skin and it can only be taken care of with surgery. Sure, there are some people who still should lose a little more weight, but most of the skin will just stay there. That's the way I has been for me since I lost nearly 200 pounds. Someday, I will be able to afford to have the surgery done to complete my weight loss success. You can see all my columns about this subject by clicking here.

Don't you NEED to eat carbs in your diet?

Contrary to what you may have heard from well-meaning health "experts," there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate in your diet. There just isn't! The body no more "needs" carbs than it does poison. The reality is the body can make all the carbs it needs to live on through an amazing process known as gluconeogenesis just as our early ancestors did. And they didn't have the weight and health issues of modern society. With that said, the average person eats way too many carbs and most would benefit if they lowered their carbohydrate intake to less than 100g daily and much less for weight loss.

How often do you weigh yourself?

I gotta tell ya, I LOVE LOVE LOVE getting on the scale. I don't know what it is about stepping on that scale and watching the number go up and down like it does, but it motivates me either way. If the weight is up, then it makes me determined to get it down. If my weight is down, then I rejoice and let that push me to even greater success. In fact, this study proves those who weigh often are usually the most successful at keeping their weight off over the long-term. I believe it! For some people, though, the scale creates negative tension and can cause them to stumble and fail. If that's you, then put the darn thing in the closet for a while and just work the plan as if everything is working beautifully. You'll thank me later for this. :)

What supplements do you take on your low-carb lifestyle?

I am a BIG BELIEVER in taking dietary supplements because they are an essential part of any healthy lifestyle change. While it is Pollyanna-ish to think you can get all of your vitamins and minerals from diet alone, the fact is you can't. That's why I wrote a whole chapter about supplements in my book and take all of these supplements on a daily basis. Additionally, when you are first starting out on low-carb, it's a GREAT idea to take potassium supplements to ward off leg cramps. With the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) aggressively attempting to regulate the vitamin industry until they are run out of business, I am becoming more and more convinced this is a much better way to control my health than with prescription drugs.

Aren't you worried about eating an all-meat diet?

Well, contrary to what you may have "heard" about low-carb diets, it's not just all meat. You get to enjoy healthy servings of non-starchy vegetables like green leafy ones, cauliflower, broccoli and squash, just to name a few, and can even indulge in low-glycemic fruits like berries and melons. Additionally, you are privileged to consume delicious and nutritious eggs, nuts, seeds, full-fat cheeses and cream...the list goes on and on! As you can see, this is not just some "meat-only" diet and a survey found that vegetable consumption DOUBLED for people who went on a low-carb diet.

Is it true low-carb only works once and then it stops working?

Ahhh, the infamous "one golden shot" theory about low-carb. The question is about whether low-carb is a one-time deal. Very simply put, the answer is NO. If you have lost weight on a low-carb diet before, then you will most assuredly do it again. This time around, though, try making it a permanent lifestyle change and NEVER stop doing it for the rest of your life. You'll be so glad you did!

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Leatherheads

Appearing as an extra in "Leatherheads" was awesome!

Okay, I know, this category of links is not exactly "low-carb," but I have written quite extensively about my experience being on the set of the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster film "Leatherheads" starring and produced by superstar George Clooney and co-starring Renee Zellweger and "The Office" star John Krasinski.

Working with George Clooney up close and personal

I don't think I'll ever forget what it was like to be on the set of a Hollywood movie. As glamorous as you think it might be, though, it isn't what you think. There's a WHOLE lotta down time and you start to feel like cattle (go here, move there, let's do that scene one more time after doing it 100 times already). MOO!

I was an extra for four days in three cities

Even still, the payoff was when "Leatherheads" hit theaters on April 4, 2008. The pay wasn't much, but I would have done it for nothing! Who knows what could happen from here if my former fat boy mug makes it on the silver screen!

Yep, that's Jimmy Moore playing a hotel doorman

I was in the scene with Clooney driving up on his 1920's-styled motorcycle in front of the Emerson hotel about 15 minutes into the movie. You won't be able to miss me because I'm the tall doorman in the blue uniform you see me wearing above who gives his character an incredulous look. We did that scene so many times, there's no way to miss it! :)

Here are the links to all of my "Leatherheads" posts:

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Loose Skin

I've lost nearly 200 pounds, but still "look" like I'm fat

Of all the topics I have written about at the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog, one of the most popular ones has got to be the subject of "loose skin." You know, the kind of droopy, hanging blob of flesh that has nowhere to go after you lose a whole lotta weight like I did in 2004.

"Do you still have loose skin?" people ask me all the time. Um, it's certainly not gonna go away on its own, so YEP, it's STILL there. Squish squash...watch it wiggle, see it jiggle...boing boing...plop! The "loose skin" is just gonna have to stay there until I can finally get the skin removal surgery done to my stomach and inner thighs. That's not gonna happen until I can come up with about $15,000-20,000 smackaroos!

Sure, I'll just pull that out of my hat! HA! Until then, I'll keep blogging about this issue that EVERYONE seems to be so interested in. Here are all my links about the "loose skin" issue:

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Manuel Uribe

Former 1235-pound man STILL dropping the weight on low-carb!

One of the most heartwarming diet, health, and weight loss stories that has been ongoing since January 2006 is the effort being undertaken by former half-ton man Manuel Uribe, aka "The World's Heaviest Man," to lose 1,000 pounds and save his life. It's an amazing story that I've been following closely at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog with great interest and millions of people have been inspired by Uribe's success so far--over 500 pounds lost on the low-carb lifestyle and counting! WOW!

Check out these columns I have written about Manuel Uribe at my blog:

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Sample Menus

People just starting off on a low-carb diet are confused about what they are supposed to be eating. It's not like livin' la vida low-carb is so mysterious and yet people still have questions about what their menu is supposed to look like when they are eating this way.

More than anything else, if you are interested in trying the low-carb lifestyle, then find you a book that will explain in detail what you need to do to be successful. Many of these books are in this post about my favorite low-carb books. Without having a foundation on which to base your low-carb diet, then you cannot possibly hope to be successful.

However, if you want to see how low-carb living works in the real world, I have listed 6 one-week sample low-carb menus for you below from my weight loss experience in September/October 2006. Over these six weeks, I lost 19 pounds going from 234 down to 215. Keep in mind that your results may vary and that every body is different. Just because I lost 19 pounds doesn't mean you won't lose more or less than me. Use these menus only as a guide for your own experience.

You will also see the supplements that I took during these six weeks as well as my exercise routine. If you are looking to start livin' la vida low-carb, then check out these sample menus to help you see it in action.

Theme-Based Low-Carb Links: Shirataki Noodles

Everybody and their momma's looking for information about shirataki

I have noticed a sudden exponential increase in the number of people looking for information about the amazing Japanese low-carb noodles known as shirataki as a result of a feature story that appear in the latest issue of First For Women magazine. As regular readers at the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog already know, I have written many articles about this miracle yam-based pasta alternative that is low-fat, low-calorie and low-carb. WOO HOO!

So, as a service to all of those new people (Hey there and WELCOME TO MY NEW LINKS BLOG!) who are looking for all things shirataki, the following is a listing of the columns I have written about shirataki noodles, including reviews of the House Foods and Konjac shirataki brands, TONS of delicious recipes including the ones that were submitted to me during my "Livin' La Vida Shirataki" recipe contest, where you can buy shirataki noodles for yourself, and so much more. ENJOY and come back again soon for more great theme-based links posts!
